The 193rd season of the Mikhailovsky Theatre opened with a grand premiere — a groundbreaking production by Vladimir Kekhman, who this time turned to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's opera The Queen of Spades.
Bringing the action closer to its literary source — Alexander Pushkin's novella — the director rebalanced the musical dramaturgy with fresh emphasis. He explored the nature of human passions and weaknesses, reinterpreting the key ideas of the celebrated opera: the inevitability of fate, the corrupting power of money, and the destructive force of passion that ultimately consumes love.
The audience is in for a gripping storyline, magnificent costumes inspired by Vivienne Westwood's style, and, of course, elegant sets and bold spatial solutions.
