Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin is one of the crown jewels of Russian culture. In the year marking the 225th anniversary of Alexander Pushkin’s birth, this masterpiece returned to the main stage of the NOVAT Theatre. Turning to Tchaikovsky’s renowned Lyric Scenes, director Kekhman offered the audience a fresh perspective on the beloved characters—their fates and the motives behind their actions. The performance pays homage to iconic 20th- and 21st-century productions by Konstantin Stanislavsky (1922), Boris Pokrovsky (1943), Yuri Temirkanov (1982), and Dmitri Chernyakov (2006)—featuring unexpected narrative twists and Mikhail Tatarnikov’s brilliant musical adaptation.
