Dazzling, vibrant, and witty, Die Fledermaus has long stood alongside the world's finest musical stage works. On April 5, 1874, this operetta by Johann Strauss was first presented to audiences at Vienna's Theater an der Wien. Since then, the story of a faithless husband seduced by his own wife, whose face is concealed behind a carnival mask, has captivated generations of theatergoers.
The Mikhailovsky Theatre's production highlights the exceptional nobility and refinement of the music by the acclaimed Waltz King, as well as the lightness and grace of his characters, their elegance and beauty.
"At its heart, this is a family story, relevant for all time," says Alexander Solovyov, the production's musical director and the theatre's principal conductor. "It's an eternal tale of the relationship between a man and a woman who have reached a new stage in their lives and now must look at one another with fresh eyes."
